about

Paths is a musical work of original compositions for piano and electronic instruments, which turns to look directly at climate change, trying to find hope in these dark times for our planet. It is inspired by travels to glaciers, tundra, and ice-covered lands, including Norway, Newfoundland, Alaska, Sweden, Ontario, and elsewhere.

In these places, I was witnessing such impossible beauty in the ice, the stillness of objective time, the slow beauty of nature. These were places so remarkable that I could barely believe they existed.

Yet there was a sadness hovering over each of these experiences, that these things will soon be lost. And maybe we, as a species, will be lost, too. I wanted to commemorate this singular feeling of both unbearable beauty and unbearable loss in this album.

In this record, there are my own field recordings of the waves hitting the Newfoundland shore while I was watching icebergs float by, or of my daughter's footsteps as we hiked a mountain in Alaska, or of moments of quiet nature on a Norwegian glacier.

But above all, I wanted to try to make beautiful moments of stillness and peace in the face of looming disaster. It’s not easy to look at where we are with climate change and environmental destruction and be hopeful—and I’m pretty pessimistic about our odds—but I guess I just wanted to make something beautiful. I don’t really know if art can save us, but it seems especially important right now.
